July 2013 Favorites

I have been a bad blogger as of late, but in all honesty I haven’t been wearing much makeup since I was traveling, yep we were in Ireland for what I’ve been told was a very rare heat wave, and also since summer finally arrived here in Germany in full force.  I mean when you live in a place with no air conditioning to speak of with the exception of the sanctuary that is McDonald’s and temperatures often rocket up to or close to 30° C  to 38° C (86° F to 100° F) since we too are amidst a heat wave, it makes me feel a bit hard pressed to put anything on my face aside from the necessity that is sunscreen.  Okay, so enough rambling and onto the favorites!

M.A.C. Modesty Lipstick – I was looking for a new lipstick that was a tad more neutral than my signature Russian Red and I am happy to report that I found it in Modesty.  It is a lovely subtle shade of pink which is described as a “muted neutral pink” on the M.A.C. website.   I feel that for me, this is the perfect “your lips but better shade.”

Essie Peach Daiquiri – My gal pal Mayti sent me this ages ago and I hadn’t ever used it since corals and oranges look horrendous on me since I tend to resemble Casper the Friendly Ghost much of the year.  However, I have gotten a bit of color this summer and thought that even though this wouldn’t look so hot on my fingers that it would look great on my toes, which it did.

Too Faced Chocolate Soleil Bronzer in Milk Chocolate – All my fellow fair complected ladies need to jump on this stuff.  I originally thought this would be great for contouring, which I personally stink at, but I think that for me this works better just as it was intended to be, a bronzer.  It really does give you a natural looking touch of bronze without making you look like a Jersey Shore cast member.  Oh, and did I mention that it smells like chocolate?

L’Oreal Nude Magique BB Powder – I find this powder works well on it’s own to swipe over my face to even out skin tone as well as to combat redness and shine.  I prefer to apply this with a brush rather than the sponge applicator that it comes with for a more natural even finish.

Real Techniques Powder Brush – Just like all of the other Real Techniques brushes I have, is incredibly soft and works well to go over your face to blend everything together for a finishing touch as well as to apply powder to set your makeup.

Hawaiian Tropic Silk Hydration SPF 30 – This has become my go to everyday sunscreen, I even use it on my face and it hasn’t broken me out or irritated my skin at all.  I love that his combines a moisturizer and an SPF which sinks into your skin leaving you feeling soft and moisturized rather than sticky or greasy like most sunscreens.  It has a really nice fragrance that I personally can’t get enough of.  However, if you’re a fan of sweeter scents that this may not be for you.

Vaseline Cocoa Radiant Vitalizing Body Gel Oil – This is such a great body oil and it smells amazing.  I like to apply this right after the shower, especially after shaving my legs.  It absorbs into the skin nicely and gives you one hell of a healthy glow.  Just be aware that a little goes a long way.

Redken Diamond Oil Shampoo & Conditioner – I believe this is a newish product and I am rather enjoying it.  Upon first use I noticed that my hair was in fact softer and shinier.  I am naturally a brunette and go blonde so my hair needs some help in that area.  These have a nice fragrance.  As with all Redken products, these are little on the pricey side, but well worth it especially if you can find them on sale.

Soap & Glory Sugar Crush Body Wash and Body Scrub – After hearing these from numerous bloggers and YouTuber’s I decided to hunt these down and give them a sniff while I was in Ireland.  I obviously liked what I got a whiff and quickly snatched these up.  These smell awesome, kind of like super lime infused Coca Cola.  Aside from smelling great, they actually are lovely products for your skin.  The scrub super exfoliates your skin while still being gentle and moisturizing and the body wash leaves your skin feeling soft and hydrated.

Yankee Candle Co. Sicilian Lemon – So apparently they have Yankee Candle Co. stores in Ireland, I just wish I knew that before because I would have allowed for more weight in my luggage on the way home.  Anyhow, I am a sucker for citrus scents, especially lemon.  It’s also one of the few candle fragrances that Captain Canada doesn’t object to and actually quite likes as well.  This scent is a little less sweet than the previous Lemon Zest candle I had from Yankee.

Flavia de Luce Mysteries by Allen Bradley – I had to include these because they are that great.  I’m currently on the third book in the series but I was hooked upon reading the first.  The setting is early 1950’s post war England in small picturesque country village and revolves around the life of and eleven year old girl.  However, she is not your typical eleven year old girl, Flavia has a deep love and natural aptitude for chemistry and she is about as quick-witted as they come which combines with her insatiable curiosity to contribute to her development into quite the formidable super sleuth.  I don’t want to give too much away, but if you’re a fan of fiction and wouldn’t mind an interesting fun read then definitely give it a look.  If you would like to read more about the books and to find a chronological list of the series then click here.

That’s all for now as I am off to get ready to head to the beach and I use the term “beach” loosely, it’s more like the local swimming hole.  Hey, we are landlocked and for Captain Canada and I being from the Great Lakes region, it’s as close as we can get.  Besides, when it’s this hot, you don’t discriminate just so long as you can find a way to cool off.   As always, thanks for reading, check back soon and I hope that you enjoy your weekend as much as we plan to.

M.A.C. Russian Red Lipstick

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Rating System:  Poor, Okay, Average, Good, Excellent

Brand:  M.A.C.

Product Name:  Russian Red Lipstick

Finish:  Matte

Formula:  Excellent

Pigmentation:  Excellent

Wear Time:  Excellent

Amount of Product:  3 g / 0.1 us oz

Price:  $15.00 USD, €18,50 Germany, £14.00 UK

Availability:  MAC products are available at MAC stores and counters worldwide as well as on the MAC website (which may differ depending on your country).  I purchased this particular lipstick which is part of their permanent line, while in Munich from the MAC counter in Karstadt.  To find your nearest retailer it’s best to go directly to your countries MAC website.

What I liked:  Oh my, where shall I start?  First of all, the packaging is sturdy, functional, not bulky and looks amazing.  I personally think that the classic MAC lipstick bullet is not only simple but also timeless.  The formula is wonderful.  It glides on smoothly and doesn’t feel dry or sticky at all, it almost has a buttery consistency, which I think is particularly impressive considering this is one of their matte shades.  It has a pleasant subtle vanilla scent which I really like.  Russian Red is super pigmented, which is something I have heard is standard for all MAC products.  I found this lipstick to be pretty long-lasting as well.

What I didn’t like:  …crickets chirping…

My two cents:  Russian Red is bloody gorgeous and I love, love, love it!  Since acquiring it, it has become my go to lipstick not to mention one of my holy grail products.  The blue undertones complement my complexion and blue eyes, not to mention the fact that blue toned shades make your teeth look nice and white.  I was a little worried about how it would look with my current bright violet hair but somehow, it works.  Then again, I have always been a fan of Rainbow Bright so I am admittedly a little bias.  I have another red MAC lipstick, which I also love but Russian Red is sure to be my signature color for years to come, just so long as MAC doesn’t go and do something insane like discontinue it.

I know that MAC products are pricey, but as far as higher end cosmetics go, I feel that they are the most affordable or at the very least, among the most affordable.  I also know that not everyone cares to part with so much of their hard earned cash for one lipstick when you could potentially get up to three drugstore brand lipsticks for the price of one MAC lipstick.  With that said though, I for one feel that you are getting a bit more bang for your buck simply because of the quality of the product.  The MAC lipsticks I have are so much more pigmented and last so much longer than any of my favorite drugstore brands.  So if you’re looking to invest in a higher end lipstick or you just want to treat yourself, then I say go for something like Russian Red which is such a classic color.  I wear it everywhere, even to the grocery store!

Tips:  The sales girl advised me (well actually Captain Canada, because he picked this up for me, I know he’s a total keeper right ladies), to use a lip liner with Russian Red and although I do wear it without one sometimes, I think it’s definitely best with a liner.  Also, be careful when wearing and removing this, because it is so incredibly pigmented, it will stain your clothing and can slightly stain your skin as well.

At the moment I own four MAC products, three of which are lipsticks and I have been so  impressed by and happy with everything.  In fact, that initial purchase at the beginning of July was the beginning of what I predict will be beautiful relationship that will stand the test of time.  I’m officially smitten.

July Favorites 2012

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

It occurred to me earlier this week that I never got around to doing a June favorites post.  So naturally I didn’t want to let things slide for the month of July as well because I have discovered quite a few new products this month that I’m loving.  So without further adieu, here they are:

  • The handmade quilt from my auntie:  My aunt has spent months lovingly crafting this for me.  When I was in the mitten last fall she had me pick out some patterns and colors that I liked but in the end I told her to just surprise me.  So you can imagine just how surprised, thrilled and touched I was when this arrived the week before my birthday.  Every time I look at it I notice something new and I will cherish this for many years to come.  Thanks again aunt Sue, not just for my quilt but for everything.
  • M.A.C. Viva Glam I Lipstick:  This was my very first M.A.C. purchase and was therefore my gateway product because now I’m hooked.  What can I say that hasn’t already been said about this.  It’s simply a beautiful deep matte red that would be flattering on a wide array of skin tones.  Amazing formula.
  • M.A.C. Russian Red Lipstick:  This one is a brighter matte red with blue tones that my amazing husband actually picked out for me and is not surprisingly his favorite on me.  Just like my Viva Glam I, the formula of this is great as with all the M.A.C. lipsticks I’ve acquired thus far all have the most lovely subtle vanilla scent, no unpleasant taste and stay put like you would not believe.
  • LUSH Love Gorilla Perfume:  I also picked this up at the very beginning of July and featured it in my LUSH Nürnberg haul.  I reach for this constantly and absolutely love it’s spicy cinnamon scent and I highly suggest you give it a whiff next time you’re in a LUSH store.  Even Captain Canada likes this, in fact it was one of my early birthday gifts from him.
  • LUSH Rock Star soap:  This is one of the items from my Munich LUSH haul and it is now a favorite of mine.  What can I say, it’s bright pink, smells like candy and leaves your skin feeling fresh and clean to boot (not pictured).
  • Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stains in Charm & Honey:  My mom sent this a few weeks ago and I’ve been using and raving about them ever since.  I’m already in the market for three more.  Just last week I posted swatches and review which you can see here.
  • Essie Go Overboard:  This is another goodie that my mom sent and I’m in love with it.  It’s such a deep rich beautiful color.  If you’re interested you can see swatches and my full review here.
  • Garnier Skin Naturals Ultra Lift Eye Cream:  I’ve been using this for a few months now and I have definitely noticed an improvement in the skin under my eyes.  It’s not a miracle cure and I’m sure there are better under eye products out there but for the price point I think it’s pretty good.
  • Garnier Ambre Solaire After Sun Milk:  The Captain and I picked this up after getting a little toasted at the thermal baths early in July.  While aloe vera is still best for more intense burns, this stuff is great as a general after sun cream.  It’s moisturizing but light and smells great.
  • Sleek Au Naturel Palette:  I got this earlier in the month and it’s as great neutral palette.  So glad it’s part of my collection.  You can see my full review here.
  • La Riche Directions Hair Dye in Violet:  After experimenting with diluting this and using other shades of purple I finally decided to use this full strength.  I’m loving this color.
  • Labello Fruity Shine Cherry lip balm:  This isn’t necessarily a new thing but I’ve been using it religiously the past month to ensure my lips are nice and moisturized.  It’s especially great to use before applying my matte red lipsticks.  Oh, and did I mention that it smells and tastes like Sweet-Tarts?  Yummy!
  • Royal & Langnickel S.I.L.K. C440 Pointed Liner brush & BC420 Smudger brush:  These brushes are a must.  Not only are they great quality, super soft brushes but they make a huge difference for me where eyeshadow application is concerned.

I know I got some of these items ages ago and have not done reviews on some of them yet but I assure you I will get to it.  For one, I like to put things to the test before I review them and secondly I have been distracted by all the new things that I’ve been hoarding acquiring.  So please bare with me.  As always, thanks for reading and check back soon.

I’m also on Facebook now!

Munich LUSH & M.A.C. Haul

Last Friday while on our way to Zell am See, Austria we made a little stop in Munich to pick up or friend Stefan who joined us for the weekend.  We had a few hours before Stefan finished with work for the day so we took the opportunity to do a little shopping.  First stop was LUSH, where Captain Canada decided to pick up two giant bars of Bohemian soap.  I have been wanting to try out some of their skincare products myself.  So I spoke with the sales woman and she suggested the Fresh Farmacy soap and the Tee Tree Water toner.  I’ve only used both of these for a few days so I can’t give a full in depth assessment, but I will say that my skin not only feels incredibly fresh and clean, but I definitely notice much less redness & oil.  I will keep on using these and give a full review later for sure though.  Since I still had a bar of Honey I Washed the Kid at home I decided to give Rock Star a try.  Not only is bright pink but it smells so yummy.

Next it was on to the Apple store to try out the new Retina Display Macbooks and then to the M.A.C. counter.  Sadly my feet were not holding out so I had to take a break rest.  For those of you who do not already know, I have suffer from terrible flat foot and arthritis.  Anyhow, my husband was kind enough to make my M.A.C. purchase for me.  I was torn between two shades of lipstick, Ruby Woo and Russian Red.  Since I was sidelined, I told Capt. Canada to make the executive decision on my behalf.  Well I have to say he made a great choice because as soon as I applied Russian Red, I was in love with it.  I’ve only used it a few times but it really seems to stay put and it is a really flattering color, but I will do a more thorough review on it as well at a later time.  A month ago I did not own one single M.A.C. product and sine the beginning of July I have acquired two lipsticks on two different trips so I think it’s safe to say that I’m hooked.  In fact I already have plans to place an order for one of the Mineralize Skinfinish powders in Light Year of Soft and Gentle, so please let me know what you think about those two products if you could.  As always, thanks for reading and check back soon.

My First M.A.C. Purchase

First of all I just wanted to wish all of my fellow Americans a very Happy 4th of July! I will no doubt be able to catch a whiff of the independence, bbq, & firework infused Americana all the way over here!  P.S. Be sure to wear some damn sunscreen while you enjoy the festivities people!

Now back to MAC!

I have to admit I have had some serious apprehension where MAC is concerned.  Years ago when before my wedding I had gone to the MAC counter in a department store in Michigan at a friends urging to purchase some makeup for my wedding day.  The girl at the counter was nice and friendly and after telling her that my wedding colors were silver and light pink, I requested something for my eyes and lips that was simple with a subtle shimmer since up until six months ago, make up rarely if ever graced my face.  She then suggested a beautiful eyeshadow and one of their Lip Glass lip glosses which  I did try at the counter.  However, when I went home and reapplied the products I just was not in love with them.  For one the Lip Glass just felt far too heavy for my liking and I also noticed that when I left the eyeshadow on longer that it kind of bothered my eyes.  Luckily my friend told me that MAC has an amazing return policy so I was able to return these items for a full refund and then my mom steered me over to the Clinique counter where I had much better luck.  So yeah, you could say that my first experience with MAC didn’t go very well, aside from the amazing customer service of course, and quite frankly turned me off of their products.

I am happy to say that my MAC boycott has now been lifted!  The reason being is that I have been on the hunt for a red lipstick that I can actually pull off and that doesn’t make me look like a clown or a color blind prostitute.  I tried Maybellines Fatal Red over a year ago and it was just all kinds of wrong so I kind of gave up.  Then a few weeks ago I took up the cause once again, did some research, and decided to to ask around and even put a post on my FaceBook page asking for recommendations.  The first person to come to my rescue was cousin Meredith (she’s technically Capt. Canada’s cousin, but I’ve claimed her as my own), and she told me to check out MAC’s Viva Glam I lipstick.  Well you can imagine when I saw “MAC” my natural instinct was to disregard it.  However, curiosity got the better of me mostly thanks to my love for and completely trust in cousin Meredith but also due to the power of suggestion thanks to the numerous blogs and YouTube channels I frequent.  So yeah, after hearing so many amazing things about MAC, namely their lipsticks I decided that it might be nice to splurge just a little and give them another go.  I spent an insane amount of time scouring the MAC site as well as looking at various swatches of all the many red lipsticks they had available and ended up with a list of shades I wanted to check out in person.  The following are the shades I came up with: Ruby Woo, So Scarlet, Viva Glam I, Dubbonet & Russian Red.  By the way, I found the color descriptions on the MAC site incredibly helpful as I knew I wanted to stay away from more yellow based reds as well as orangey reds.

This past Friday I was delighted that fate intervened allowing my husband to leave work early which in turn gave us the perfect opportunity to travel to Nürnberg, which just happens to be where the nearest MAC counter is, to do a bit of shopping.  We also visited the PUMA headquarters & outlet, LUSH, as well as IKEA that day, which I will also being doing posts on later.  Anyhow, we made our way to the city center after finding parking and then to Müller, which is a drugstore of sorts which also sells video games, movies and music.  This Müller has a huge cosmetics section, which is much more extensive than in their smaller stores, that includes brands ranging from more wallet friendly up to more high end, MAC included.  I am a no non-sense shopper and in all honesty don’t care for shopping at all so I was on a mission to get in, look at what I wanted, make my purchase and get out, much to my husband’s delight.  I found the lipstick section of the counter and swatched the colors I was interested in and immediately narrowed it down to two, Viva Glam I and Russian Red.  I was torn, so I asked the sales woman who preferred Russian Red, and my husband who of course liked Viva Glam I, which just happened to be the one I was leaning toward as well, so Viva Glam I it was.  I did check out and swatch a few of the mineralize eye shadows, Gilt By Association and Smutty Green but passed as I just felt as though they were too glittery for me.  So I picked up a Maybelline Color Sensational lip liner in Pleasure Me Red, and made my purchases and the rest as they say is history.

I have only worn Viva Glam I a few times now but I can honestly say that I am so happy with my purchase and I really do love it.  I feel like this works well for me and my fair skin tone, it even looks okay with my new light purple hair.  The past few days I’ve kind of been training myself to get used to having such a highly pigmented lipstick on though as I have only worn very sheer and nude lipsticks before this.  I did wear it out on Saturday at the Captain’s urging and kept asking him “Are you sure I don’t look like prozzie?”  Me in red lipstick, who ever would have thought!  I’m sold though and I fully intend to pick up Russian Red and perhaps a few more colors.  I’m just so impressed with the pigmentation and how long wearing this lipstick is.  I can definitely see why everyone raves over MAC lipsticks and while I still like my Maybelline and Catrice lipsticks, they are just in a whole different class.  Sad but true.

What do you think of Viva Glam I or MAC lipsticks in general? Do you have a favorite red lipstick?  Please comment below.  I will do a full review of this at a later time once I’ve put it to use a bit more.  As always, thanks for reading and check back soon.
