May 2013 Favorites

Goodbye cold, rainy, depressing May and hello to a hopefully warm sunny June!  May was not nice, the weather was horrible and I was sick as a dog the past two weeks, which is why I hadn’t been posting much and why my monthly favorites post is a bit later than I would’ve liked it to be.  I have been posting little tidbits on my Facebook page though so if you’re not following me on there you can do so by clicking here as it is where I typically post information about various sales and coupon codes.

Before we get started, I wanted to mention that there are only a few more days left to enter my One Year Blogiversay Giveaway.  So if you’ve not done so already, be sure to enter and spread the word.  My friend Jessica, over at Product Hoochie is also hosting a giveaway to celebrate her first year of blogging as well so click here to check out the details and be sure to wish her a very happy blogiversay while you’re there.  Now onto to the favorites!

Maybelline 24 hr Color Tattoo Barely Beige – This is such a nice neutral cream shadow that can be used on it’s own or as a base for other shadows.  I quite enjoy using this with my M.A.C. Mineralize Skinfinish in Soft and Gentle brushed over top.  I think everyone needs this little pot of goodness as it would suit just about any skin tone.

Kiko Makeup Milano Smart Lipstick  in 912 Crimson Red – I decided to give these a try since I was picking one up for a friend of mine who thought they looked interesting.  Well I am glad to say that she has a good eye because these are wonderful lipsticks, especially for the price.  This color is out of my comfort zone, but I quite like it.

EOS Lip Balm Pomegranate – This flavor has surpassed EOS Sweet Mint as my favorite from the brand.  I just love how it tastes and I can’t put my finger on it, but something is different in a good way about this formula.

Zoya Dahlia – I am a big fan of black nail polish and as I’ve mentioned before, I am really loving the matte texture trend so this delivers on both fronts for me.  I love the slightly more fun & feminine twist Zoya put on black by the matte finish and with that bit of sparkle.

Zoya Vespa – While this ended up being more subtle than I had anticipated, it ended up being a good thing.  I rarely go for subtle when it comes to my nail color but Vespa still gives a nice hint of green and glitter without being so in your face about it.

Tarte Amazonian Clay Blush Blissful – This is such a nicely pigmented pop of coral that gives your cheeks a surprisingly natural flush.  I love that these can be worn more sheer for a subtle wash of color or applied more heavily for a more vibrant look.

Color Lock Clip – I had seen these a very long time ago in Sally Beauty and passed them by, but while in the States in March I decided to pick them up finally as I was so tired of the cheap crappy metal clips I’ve been fumbling with for years.  These things are so awesome I just can’t say enough.  I use them during styling and when I dye my crazy multicolored hair and these little suckers grab on like a crocodile and don’t let go.

Alex and Ani Four Leaf Clover Charm Bangle – My friend Hilary introduced me to Alex and Ani and them promptly took me to their store in Newport, Rhode Island.  That is where I picked up this bracelet that I fell in love with at first sight.  I love how simple and timeless these charm bracelets are and how easily they can be mixed and matched.  Alex and Ani offer a wide variety of not only bracelets but necklaces, earrings and rings as well.  If you’ve not checked them out then click here.

Ray Ban Sunglasses – I know these aren’t technically a beauty item, but hey they protect the eyes and that’s particularly important for the summer months.  In all honesty, I was lucky enough to win these via a Twitter contest that Coastal put on back in February (they are very present on the social media front).  These are just such a great classic frame.  I know I mention Coastal a fair bit, but I genuinely think they’re awesome.  If you’ve not already checked them out, I highly suggest you do so.  Not only do they have an amazing “First Pair Free” promo, but they frequently have really good sales and contests going on.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend full of sun and fun.  As always, thanks for reading and check back soon for more.

February 2013 Favorites

It’s time for monthly favorites again folks!  It seems like this month flew by fairly quickly for me.  I don’t know about you but I am ready to bid winter adieu already.  Quite frankly I just can’t take the lack the sunlight much longer.  By the time the sun finally does make its appearance I won’t be surprised if I find myself suffering from a vitamin D deficiency.  Thankfully we will heading down to Munich next week, so that will provide for a break in the monotony, an opportunity to do a little shopping and most importantly we will be able to spend some time catching up with one of our BFFs.  Now that we’re all caught up, onto my February favorites.

Maybelline The Rocket Waterproof Mascara – I’ve been testing this out since the beginning of the month and I am really happy with it.  I did notice that it got better with use as I think that initially it was slightly on the wet side.  Now it’s just right.  Full review coming soon.

Maybelline Color Tattoo in Pink Gold – This was one of the new colors they released here in Germany this month.  It’s just a lovely light color that gives a nice subtle glow and a hint of pink that can be built up slightly depending on application.  For you North American ladies, this is exactly the same as the Inked In Pink color that was released as part of the Metal Collection a while back.

NYX HD Eye Shadow Base – That lovely lady we all know as Product Hoochie actually sent this to me in the swap we did a while back.  It really seems to do the trick and I will definitely repurchase this.  Thanks again!

Essie “Where’s My Chauffer” – Back in December when this collection was released I passed this one up as I thought it was too similar to other colors I already owned.  Then when Captain Canada was away in China I had a moment of weakness when I noticed this one lone bottle left and decided to grab it and I’m glad I did.  It is such a nice beautiful, fun color.

Essie “Bobbing For Baubles” – I know I’m late to the game on this one and was lucky to pick it up from the re-release Essie appeared to do of a few colors from past collections here in Germany.  It’s just such a nice dark color, which I’m all about.

Skinfood Milk Creamy Nail “Pink Milk” PK006 – Captain Canada brought this along with two other colors home for me from China.  This is only one of two pink nail polishes that I could tolerate.  Yeah, I have issues with pink shades.  Anyhow, everything was lovely about this right down to the super cute packaging.

Bdellium Tools Precision Kabuki 957 Amazon Purple Exclusive  – This is such a great high quality, super affordable (it’s currently on for half the list price), multi-use brush.  I find this works great for applying my M.A.C. Mineralize Skinfinish Natural.  I know it’s a bit fickle but I’ll be honest, I really do love that it is purple.  You can see my full review and more photos here.

Bdellium Tools Tapered Blending Brush 785 Professional Green Bambu Series – So I finally got a good blending brush and that my friends, has made a huge difference.  I honestly don’t know how I lived without this.

Organic Coconut Oil – I admit I haven’t tested this out extensively yet, but I am already shocked by the magic it worked on my skin in particular.  So far I have used this on areas like my elbows, heals, face, scalp and hair.  I’ve even been applying it on Gemma where she has some super dry patches on her skin where she experiences seasonal balding.  Coconut oil is said to offer numerous benefits to your health and can be used for so many things.  If you’re interested in reading up on the wonders of coconut oil then be sure to check out the extensive list that Hybrid Rasta Mama has compiled on her site.  (Thanks for that great link Jessica.)

Derek Cardigan 7003 Green Tortoise Frames – I got these ages ago but only wore them on rare occasion to be honest since I tend to favor the same pair I have in black.  However, I had my hair re-bleached last week and while I wait for the new hair dye I want to try out to arrive, I’m stuck being super blond for a while and the color of these frames seem to look nicer with my hair.  If you’re wondering where you can find these lovely glasses then just continue on to my next favorite.

Coastal – Coastal an online eyewear company which provide great products for affordable prices and always seem to have additional sales, promotions and contests going on.  I actually did a review of my experience with Coastal way back in the summer which you can see here if you’re interested.  My mom, cousin, sister-in-law and I have all taken advantage of their first pair free promotion, which is still running, and I can honestly say that we are all very happy customers.  Recently I was lucky enough to win a contest they held on Twitter to win a free pair of frames for myself and someone I loved, hey it was right around Valentines Day, so I along with one of my cousins are awaiting the arrival of our new Coastal frames.

While it was great to win the contest, I just really love what they’re doing at Coastal.  As someone who has worn glasses for the majority of their life, I know how important it is to take care of your eyes and how costly it can be when you or your child are dealt the “you need glasses” card.  Coastal makes quality eyewear more accessible to those who may not have insurance coverage or in some cases the exorbitant funds to spare.  So if you or someone you know are in the market for a pair of glasses give Coastal a look.

*Just for the record, Coastal has not paid me or asked me to mention them and I have no affiliation with them.

OMG…Those Glasses Were Free!?!?

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

A few months ago I came across a post on Luuux about this website, Coastal.com that was offering a free pair of frames complete basic prescription lenses for free.  I being the skeptic that I am thought it sounded too good to be true.  However, my curiosity got the better of me and I decided to investigate.  I dug around on the Coastal site and even chatted with a customer service representative to answer some questions I had because I thought there was surely a catch.  Well lo and behold it was not in fact too good to be true and there wasn’t a catch.  Just please be aware of the following terms and conditions that apply, which I have listed at the bottom of this post for your convenience.

So here is the deal, you head on over to Coastal.com and click the banner near the bottom of the homepage that reads “GET YOUR FIRST PAIR OF GLASSES FREE.”  From there you will be taken to the page displaying the frames they have on offer for this particular promotion.  You might be thinking, as I was initially, that there won’t be much to choose from and that what they do have won’t be very nice or cute, and you much like myself would be proven wrong.  They had and still have plenty of great frames to choose from for men, women and children.  Okay, so once you choose your frames you will be prompted to tell them how you will be using your glasses and enter your prescription information.  Please be aware that you will need your pupillary distance measurement as well, but if you don’t have it there are excellent instructions on how you can take this measurement yourself.  Once you’ve entered your prescription information then you will be prompted to make your lens selection.  As I mentioned above, Coastal throws in the standard lenses for free, although at this point it says that they are $9.95.  Rest assured though, that upon checkout that charge will disappear.  Just be sure to choose the “Standard Lens” option if you do not want incur any additional fees.  However, if you would like to you can upgrade to a higher quality lens, a sunglass lens or add one or all of the three available protective coating options at this point at an additional charge.   Perhaps you’re still skeptical, I admit I still was at this point, but once you proceed to the checkout you can finally enter the discount code FIRSTPAIRFREE and see the charge for the frame and standard lens magically disappear.  This is where you will find out the exact amount you will be charged for your insurance  fee which is based on the value of the frames you have selected and shipping fees depending on which option you chose.  Along with your glasses, you will also receive a hard case, a double ended screwdriver on a key chain for your glasses and a microfiber cleaning cloth.

I received my glasses from Coastal nearly a month ago and have been wearing and loving them ever since.  Since I had intended this pair of glasses to serve as a backup pair to my very fashion forward, pricey, carbon and lime green Etnia Barcelona frames, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the frames and even the basic lenses which I opted for.  In all honesty I wasn’t quite expecting to love these glasses anywhere near as much as I do.  In fact I have worn these more than my Etnia’s since I decided to dye my hair bright purple because the bottom half of my Etnia’s are transparent lime green and I feared my crazy hair color would transfer.  So the basic black Derek Cardigan frames I got have been a perfect solution for that.  Not to mention the fact that the particular wayfarer style  frames I chose (Derek Cardigan 7003 in black) are right on trend, so incredibly cute and comfortable, more so after I had them adjusted properly.

I also thought it was worth mentioning that my mom also took advantage of this great deal (her frames are the pretty one’s with rhinestones on the arms).  For those of you who don’t know my dear mommy, she can be rather particular about things.  That is perhaps why I remember her calling me the day her glasses arrived so well, because she too was very happy with her frames and could not believe just how nice they were.  I was astonished because I had not yet received mine at that point.  So if my mom and I were both happy with Coastal, I can’t imagine that anyone else wouldn’t be.

Last week I had read somewhere, I can’t recall where exactly, that the “First Pair Free” promo ended on August 22nd, which I was glad to find out is NOT the case.  I chatted with another one of Coastal’s customer service reps today via the live chat feature on their site and asked her when the promotion ended and her exact words were, “the First Pair Free promo is here to stay.”  Woo Hoo!  If you, or anyone you know is currently shopping around for glasses then I say head on over to Coastal and jump on this and spread the word.  You will receive a quality product, great service and super quick shipping, or at least that was my experience.  By the way, they also have an a “Back To School” promo on right now as well where you can get two frames (luxury frames excluded) for $75 which free shipping.

Although I was jazzed to get a free pair of glasses, I couldn’t help but think just how amazing this would be for anyone in serious need of new glasses that perhaps could not otherwise afford them.  Glasses are expensive at the best of times, but particularly so during this horrible economic downturn that has hit everyone so hard.  So if you’ve seen me tweet about this promo or if you’ve seen it on the Girl In The Glasses Facebook page it’s truly because I am so impressed with this company and I simply want to get the word out to those who will benefit most from this amazing offer.  Also, just for the record, I have no affiliation with Coastal, nor was I approached by them to feature their services.  All opinions expressed in this post are truly my own.  As always, thanks for reading and check back soon.

My Missing Package From June Arrived

Way back in June my mom sent me a package containing some items I had either ordered or asked her to hunt down for me that I was unable to get here in Deutschland.  Well to make a long story short, she sent that sucker on June 15th and when it didn’t arrive even three weeks later, I was getting a little annoyed and worried.  So I assumed it was simply stuck it customs and that I would receive a letter from them shortly wanting me to pay up.  The letter, nor the package never came and I was thinking of filing a complaint.  Then this past Saturday morning the door bell rang, the incredibly bullie duo went ballistic, and Captain Canada made a beeline to shut them in the living room so he could answer the door without giving the person on the other side the fright of their life.  Low and behold it was in fact my long-lost package!  Once happy dances commenced, I tore that thing open with the enthusiasm of a child on Christmas morning.

In case you were wondering the contents of this package included the following items:

  • The free glasses that I got from Coastal via their “First Pair Free Promo
  • Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain in Charm & Honey
  • Maybelline Color Tattoo eyeshadow in Fierce And Tangy & Pomegranate Punk
  • Essie Nail Polish in Mojito Madness, Bikini So Teeny & Go Overboard

I will of course be doing reviews on everything seen here as soon I’ve put them through their paces of course.  As always, thanks for reading and check back soon.
