September 2013 Favorites

Better late than never…right?  Well here are some things I have been enjoying over the past month (more like two months).  I also threw in a little bulldog cuteness so that you can see just what it’s like to get anything done when there is a bulldog or sometimes even two “helping.”  Enjoy!

Max Factor Face Finity All Day Flawless 3 in 1 Foundation – I am loving this in spite of it’s ridiculously long name.  This is the first drugstore foundation I have found that I have not hated and that actually has worked for my oily skin.  I will eventually do a full review of this but for now I can honestly say that this applies easily, wears well, and has a really natural finish while still provided a decent amount of coverage.  For those of you in the United States or other places where Max Factor is not available, this is the same product as the Cover Girl Outlast Stay Fabulous 3 in 1 Foundation.

Maybelline Baby Lips Peach Kiss Lip Balm – These suckers finally landed in Germany!  I for one am thankful because they are great to throw in your bag or pocket.  Not only is it moisturizing, but it also contains SPF 20 and provides a hint of color.  I am kicking myself for not picking them up when I was in the States last time.  However, I will be trying more of these.

Maybelline Dream Touch Blush in 07 Plum – I have been wanting to give these a try for ages and have had them in my hands numerous times while shopping but always decided to put them back.  Now I am wondering what I was thinking because this is such a lovely blush.  It gives a nice pop of color with a little shimmer.  This is the first cream blush I’ve tried and now I’m on the hunt for more.  Sadly, I don’t believe that these are available in the U.S. any longer.

L’Oréal Color Infallible 24 HR Eye Shadow in 004 Forever Pink – This caught my eye since it was included in a special display in one of my local Müller stores back in the summer, yep I’m a sucker.  I think this would suit just about anyone and I feel like it would be a good color to start with if you’re interested in trying the Color Infallible shadows.  It’s great as an inner corner highlight but I especially like to apply to the inner two-thirds of my eyelids with a darker matte color on the outer part and in the crease.

The Balm Down Boy Blush – First off, I have to give a little shout out and an even bigger thanks to Jessica (a.k.a. Product Hoochie), for helping me to purchase my very first products from The Balm.  Down Boy is a nice classic girly pink, in my opinion.  I like to apply this with a light hand as it is quite pigmented.  I really need to try out more of The Balms blushes.

The Balm Mary Lou Manizer Highlighter – I know I’m late to the game on this, but after hearing so many people rave about this I had to give it a try.  It is such a beautiful champagne colored highlight.  While it does work great as a highlighter on the cheek bones, brown bone and inner corners of the eye, I also like to apply it all over my eyelids for a quick fix to brighten up my eyes on lazy days.

Urban Decay 24/7 Glide On Eye Pencils in Zero & Demolition – Another little goodie from the lovely Product Hoochie who was kind enough to send me these two mini’s since she knew I had been on the hunt for an eyeliner that not only stayed put but also did not irritate my crazy sensitive eyes.  Well lo and behold these really did live up to all the hype and ticked both boxes for me.  I will no longer waste another dime on any other eyeliners and will most definitely be investing in more of these in the future.

Garnier Fructis Schöne Haut Öl (Beautiful Skin Oil) – I picked this up when I stumbled upon it after hearing Estée from Essie Button talk about it.  First off I’m not in love with the scent due to the fact that is has a subtle hint of rose, but don’t let that put you because it is by no means offensive or overpowering in the least and doesn’t hang around forever.  However, I can get past my aversion to rose/floral fragrance because this is truly a great body oil that really seems to moisturize your skin and give it a nice healthy glow.  You also can’t beat the easy on your wallet price tag.  The past few years I really find that I have quite liked Garnier’s body moisturizers.   This is definitely available in the UK but sadly it is not available in the United States.  I’ve also spied a new anti-aging version on the German site so I will be on the hunt for it.

Garnier Fructis Wunder Öl (for hair) – This is the best-selling hair oil in Europe supposedly and I can see why.  It really does leave your hair looking shiny, smelling great and feeling soft and silky while also providing heat protection.  I know there are a lot of other hair oils on the market but this one gives the most bang for your buck in my opinion.  On a side note, I checked the US site and I don’t believe that this exact product is available there unfortunately but I imagine that the Triple Nutrition Miracle Dry Oil might be pretty close and the good thing is that it can be used on your hair as well as your skin.

Thomas Sabo Charm Club – This was a gift from my incredibly sweet friend Angy and I absolutely adore everything about it.  There are a variety of different bracelets to choose from and then you can customize it by adding charms from their huge collection.  Since she knows I am a crazy dog mom she picked the most perfect pairing for me.  Love my little bullies and my thoughtful friend!

I’m trying to get back into the swing of things where my poor neglected blog is concerned.  I just got a box of Zoya products that I had ordered so I’m hoping to get some more nail polish reviews up soon.  Hopefully you and yours are enjoying the fall and all the fun that comes with it.  As always, thanks for reading!

July 2013 Favorites

I have been a bad blogger as of late, but in all honesty I haven’t been wearing much makeup since I was traveling, yep we were in Ireland for what I’ve been told was a very rare heat wave, and also since summer finally arrived here in Germany in full force.  I mean when you live in a place with no air conditioning to speak of with the exception of the sanctuary that is McDonald’s and temperatures often rocket up to or close to 30° C  to 38° C (86° F to 100° F) since we too are amidst a heat wave, it makes me feel a bit hard pressed to put anything on my face aside from the necessity that is sunscreen.  Okay, so enough rambling and onto the favorites!

M.A.C. Modesty Lipstick – I was looking for a new lipstick that was a tad more neutral than my signature Russian Red and I am happy to report that I found it in Modesty.  It is a lovely subtle shade of pink which is described as a “muted neutral pink” on the M.A.C. website.   I feel that for me, this is the perfect “your lips but better shade.”

Essie Peach Daiquiri – My gal pal Mayti sent me this ages ago and I hadn’t ever used it since corals and oranges look horrendous on me since I tend to resemble Casper the Friendly Ghost much of the year.  However, I have gotten a bit of color this summer and thought that even though this wouldn’t look so hot on my fingers that it would look great on my toes, which it did.

Too Faced Chocolate Soleil Bronzer in Milk Chocolate – All my fellow fair complected ladies need to jump on this stuff.  I originally thought this would be great for contouring, which I personally stink at, but I think that for me this works better just as it was intended to be, a bronzer.  It really does give you a natural looking touch of bronze without making you look like a Jersey Shore cast member.  Oh, and did I mention that it smells like chocolate?

L’Oreal Nude Magique BB Powder – I find this powder works well on it’s own to swipe over my face to even out skin tone as well as to combat redness and shine.  I prefer to apply this with a brush rather than the sponge applicator that it comes with for a more natural even finish.

Real Techniques Powder Brush – Just like all of the other Real Techniques brushes I have, is incredibly soft and works well to go over your face to blend everything together for a finishing touch as well as to apply powder to set your makeup.

Hawaiian Tropic Silk Hydration SPF 30 – This has become my go to everyday sunscreen, I even use it on my face and it hasn’t broken me out or irritated my skin at all.  I love that his combines a moisturizer and an SPF which sinks into your skin leaving you feeling soft and moisturized rather than sticky or greasy like most sunscreens.  It has a really nice fragrance that I personally can’t get enough of.  However, if you’re a fan of sweeter scents that this may not be for you.

Vaseline Cocoa Radiant Vitalizing Body Gel Oil – This is such a great body oil and it smells amazing.  I like to apply this right after the shower, especially after shaving my legs.  It absorbs into the skin nicely and gives you one hell of a healthy glow.  Just be aware that a little goes a long way.

Redken Diamond Oil Shampoo & Conditioner – I believe this is a newish product and I am rather enjoying it.  Upon first use I noticed that my hair was in fact softer and shinier.  I am naturally a brunette and go blonde so my hair needs some help in that area.  These have a nice fragrance.  As with all Redken products, these are little on the pricey side, but well worth it especially if you can find them on sale.

Soap & Glory Sugar Crush Body Wash and Body Scrub – After hearing these from numerous bloggers and YouTuber’s I decided to hunt these down and give them a sniff while I was in Ireland.  I obviously liked what I got a whiff and quickly snatched these up.  These smell awesome, kind of like super lime infused Coca Cola.  Aside from smelling great, they actually are lovely products for your skin.  The scrub super exfoliates your skin while still being gentle and moisturizing and the body wash leaves your skin feeling soft and hydrated.

Yankee Candle Co. Sicilian Lemon – So apparently they have Yankee Candle Co. stores in Ireland, I just wish I knew that before because I would have allowed for more weight in my luggage on the way home.  Anyhow, I am a sucker for citrus scents, especially lemon.  It’s also one of the few candle fragrances that Captain Canada doesn’t object to and actually quite likes as well.  This scent is a little less sweet than the previous Lemon Zest candle I had from Yankee.

Flavia de Luce Mysteries by Allen Bradley – I had to include these because they are that great.  I’m currently on the third book in the series but I was hooked upon reading the first.  The setting is early 1950’s post war England in small picturesque country village and revolves around the life of and eleven year old girl.  However, she is not your typical eleven year old girl, Flavia has a deep love and natural aptitude for chemistry and she is about as quick-witted as they come which combines with her insatiable curiosity to contribute to her development into quite the formidable super sleuth.  I don’t want to give too much away, but if you’re a fan of fiction and wouldn’t mind an interesting fun read then definitely give it a look.  If you would like to read more about the books and to find a chronological list of the series then click here.

That’s all for now as I am off to get ready to head to the beach and I use the term “beach” loosely, it’s more like the local swimming hole.  Hey, we are landlocked and for Captain Canada and I being from the Great Lakes region, it’s as close as we can get.  Besides, when it’s this hot, you don’t discriminate just so long as you can find a way to cool off.   As always, thanks for reading, check back soon and I hope that you enjoy your weekend as much as we plan to.

April 2013 Favorites

Let me start by saying that my long hiatus has in fact come to an end as I arrived back in Germany last Wednesday.  For those of you who did not already know, I had been in Michigan for just over a month.  To make a long story short, my mom has been dealt some rather nasty blows health-wise over the past year and a half and I traveled back to the States to be with her.  Although she still has a tough year ahead of her, she has done remarkably well thus far.  Also, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has kept her in their thoughts during this difficult time, my family and I appreciate it so very much.

Now it’s time for my monthly favorites, which include items from March and April since I skipped March.  I picked up most of these items while I was in the U.S. so just beware that some of them might not be available in the UK or Europe yet, if at all.

April 2013Faves

Urban Decay Naked Basics Palette – My wonderful mother picked this up for me and shipped it along with some other goodies I had requested way back in early March and she and I both loved it (she kept stealing it while I was in the Mitten).  This is simply a great, versatile, neutral palette that you would do well to add to your collection.  It’s small but mighty!

Cover Girl Jumbo Gloss Balms in Ballet Twist 205 & Cocoa Twist 270 – One of these I purchased on my first day back in Michigan and the other was gift from that awesome gal pal of mine, whom I was lucky enough to spend a day with, Product Hoochie.  These stubby lip crayons are very hydrating and allow for a fool-proof application even on the go.  Not to mention that they come in a wide array of colors so you are sure to find one, or a few, to suit your skin tone and tastes.

Essie First Timer – This lovely shade of green is part of Essie’s 2013 Resort collection (not out in the UK or Europe yet).  Green is my favorite color so as soon as I laid eyes on the press release photos for this collection I knew I had to have this.  It’s such a fun color for spring and summer.

Clear Scalp & Hair Therapy Ultra Shea Shampoo – Hands down one of, if not the best, drugstore shampoo’s I have ever used.  It smells fantastic, leaves your hair feeling soft and moisturized not to mention that it even helped with my itchy scalp problem. I will be keeping my fingers crossed that this shows up in Europe.  (Not pictured.)

Tarte Amazonian Clay 12 Hour Blush in Blushing Bride – Don’t fret, it is not as scary as it looks in the pan and can be sheered out nicely if you like.  Super pigmented, long wearing, great formula.   Would suit a multitude of skin tones.

Tarte Skinny Smolder Eyes Amazonian Clay Waterproof Liner in Golden Tigers Eyes – Whew!  How long is that name?  Love the creamy formula, the color and the fact that it does not irritate my sensitive eyes.  A big thanks to Product Hoochie’s lil’ sis for suggesting that I give this a try.

Clinique Line Smoothing Concealer – I’ve heard Heather from How To Be Fancy talk about this in her videos and was intrigued.  So far I am very happy with this concealer.  I feel it is a great match for my skin tone and it stays put.

Real Techniques Blush Brush – Such a great brush!  Super soft, micro-fiber, cruelty free bristles.  Allows for excellent application whether you need more precision placement of a product or if you need to blend it out.

Maybelline 24hr Color Tattoo in Pink Gold 65 –  The Color Tattoo’s are an amazing product and this particular color is no exception.  It’s subtle and gives a nice glow while not being overly shimmery.  I find it’s perfect for those not so fussy days and can easily transition to an evening by popping a bit of a darker color (plum or charcoal) in your outer crease keeping it darker at the outer corner.

I’m hoping to get back to posting regularly and you can count on seeing reviews of some of these products soon.  As always, thanks for reading and check back soon.

January 2013 Favorites

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Since I didn’t do a December favorites this will be a bit of mishmash of things I enjoyed over the past two months.  You may notice there aren’t as many nail polishes included this time around and that is because I’ve not been painting my nails as much these days because I’ve noticed they are a bit on the fragile side as of late.  So I’ve been trying to give them a little break, while I try to whip them back into shape by taking biotin and allow some breaks to grow out.  I’ve also included a few non-beauty related items to mix things up a bit.

Canon IXUS 125 HS / ELPH 110 HS:  Captain Canada got me this for Christmas and it is the reason that my pictures are looking so much better.  This is a really great camera and you get a lot of bang for your buck.  It’s very user friendly, even for a novice and the photo and video quality is excellent.

Tigi S Factor Smoothing Shampoo & Conditioner:  This has really helped my hair feel soft again and it’s just a really good every day shampoo & conditioner.  I love the strawberry fragrance as well.

Bioderma Sensibio H2O Micelle Solution:  This is hands down the best, most effective, and gentle makeup remover I have ever used.  It’s unscented and safe for use around your eyes.  In fact it is the only remover I’ve come across that has not bothered my sensitive eyes.  You can see my full review here.

Bioderma Sébium Foaming Gel Cleanser:  A month in and this has proven to be a nice cleanser for my acne prone, oily combination skin.  It does seem to help a bit with oil control and a little goes a long way.

Caudalie Beauty Elixir:  I’m on my second bottle and I feel as though it has helped brighten my complexion.  I even suspect that it might be helping to tone down the redness on my cheeks as well.

Beauty So Clean Cupcake Conditioning Brush Cleanser:  How To Be Fancy actually recommended this to me when I asked for some brush cleaning advice a while back.  Now I will never be without it.  It does a fantastic job of spot cleaning and makes deep cleaning with soap and water a much less arduous task.

Sleek Blush in Rose Gold:  So glad Painted Nails & Baking Scales sent me this in our swap.  I’ve really been trying to give blush more of a chance recently and this gives a nice healthy glow.

Kiko Milano Colour Seduction Palettes in 01 Sumptuous Mocha & 02 Sensuous Burgundy :  I picked one of these up and ended up going back for another since I loved the first one so much.  These shadows are incredibly pigmented, have a soft buttery texture and blend nicely.

M.A.C. Diva Lipstick:  While I’m typically a red lipstick loyalist (Russian Red is my signature color), I really wanted to try something just a little different and Diva was a perfect choice.  It’s described as an “intense matte reddish burgundy.”

Rimmel Match Perfection Concealer:  This is just a good, affordable drugstore under eye concealer that can also double as a highlighter.

Chanel Malice Nail Lacquer:  You can read my full review here if you’re interested.  Malice is truly the most beautiful red nail polish I have ever laid my eyes on and I love it.    It’s one of those classic colors that pretty well anyone could pull off.

Carcassonne The Castle:  I gave this to the Captain for Christmas and we’ve both enjoyed playing it.  It’s more of a quick play and it’s especially nice because it’s a two player game.

Carcassonne Mayflower (New World):  We just picked this up last week on whim since it was on sale for 7 EUR and were pleasantly surprised by how good it was.  It’s a bit of a twist on the original Carcassonne.  So if you’re a Carcassonne fan or just an avid board gamer then I highly recommend picking this up.

November 2012 Favorites

Before I get started I wanted to give the lovely Lou from Painted Nails & Baking Scales a great big THANKS for the super wonderful package that I received from her today! We decided to do a little swap so that each of us could get our nail polish hoarding little hands on some products from one another’s countries, which I appreciated so very much.  By the way, if you’ve not checked out her blog yet then do yourself a favor, give that link a little click and take a wander over today.  So yeah, look for a post on our swap soon.

Now onto the favorites!

LUSH Snow Globe Soap:  This has a really nice citrus fragrance with a hint of something else that I just can’t put my finger on.  However, the LUSH site says it’s a blend of grapefruit, lemon and lemon grass.  Whatever it is, the Captain and I both like it.  He liked it so much that once again I didn’t even get to use the first bar we purchased but two times before it disappeared.  Luckily we picked up a gigantic chunk of it while in Cologne.

LUSH Porridge Soap:  I finally decided to give this one a try after picking it up and delighting in it’s yummy scent and passing for months.  I think the chunky porridge bits put me off a bit, but those little suckers combined with the creaminess of the soap help exfoliate your skin, leaving it soft and smooth.  Not only is this great to use as a general exfoliant, but I like to use it before shaving my legs, and to help with dry rough heals.  I will definitely be re-purchasing this.  (Not pictured because it’s in my shower and doesn’t look so nice as it’s been lovingly used and eroded by water.)

Sugarpill Heart Breaker Palette:  I don’t want to give too much away on the Sugarpill products as I still plan to review them in full.  However, I will say that these shadows are super pigmented, easy to work with, velvety smooth texture and mostly they just make me super happy when I wear them.  Although my happiness could be mistaken for vanity because I constantly look in the mirror and smile when wearing Sugarpill.  Ah well….ce la vie!

Sugarpill Bulletproof Pressed Eyeshadow:  Blackest black black shadow EVER!

Caudelie Beauty Elixir:  There is definitely something magical in this bottle.  I suspect that this may just be what is helping my skin look more refreshed and slightly more radiant.

Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain in Romantic:  It took me a long time to warm to this color even though I love a red lip.  It finally happened though and I’m really enjoying it now.  It can give a subtle wash of color or you can build it up to be more intense.  It definitely has some staying power.

Models Own 5 Piece Brush Set:  I picked these up way back in the summer and have been loving them so much from go.  In fact I don’t know why I have no included these in a monthly favorites yet.  Clearly I’ve suffered from brain fartage, my apologies.  These are a good size for travel and I was quite honestly shocked by how the good quality and how soft and lovely these brushes are.  If I’m wearing makeup, you can bet that most of these brushes were used in it’s application.

Models Own Golden Green:  As some of you may know, I am a complete sucker for green anything because it’s my favorite color.  This polish is such a beautiful shade of green.  While it is a duo-chrome, it’s a more subtle one, that I would tend to think favors more of a metallic finish.  Either way, I love it!  You can see swatches and my full review here.

Nails Inc. Sweets Way:  So pretty and unique.  It’s a more subtle way to do glitter in my opinion.  It seriously looks like cupcake frosting and sprinkles superimposed themselves into your nails.  I’m so smitten that I definitely need all three of the other colors.  To see swatches and my full review click here.

LCN Aroma Remover Winter Edition:  This is one of those “I grabbed it on a whim” products and I’m so glad that I did.  I don’t want to speak too soon but this may be just as good if not better than my holy grail Butter London Powder Room remover.  The big difference being that this is not as pricey and actually smells wonderful.  I will need to stock up on this though because it’s a limited edition scent.

Kamille & Calendula Lip Balm:  Even though the Nuxe Creme de Miel Ultra Nourishing lip balm is in my holy grail lip balm, I still need something to keep in my bag or pocket when I’m out and about.  Well that, and I consider myself a bit of a lip balm connoisseur/collector/addict so I actually need to keep trying them out (that’s mostly directed at Captain Canada).  I just love this formula.  It’s very soothing, has a nice incredibly subtle  fragrance and it does the job quite well.  Click here to read my full review.

I have some new hair products and a new brush cleaner on the way and I just received the bottle of Bioderma Sensibio H2O Mecellaire Solution in the mail today.  So you can count on some reviews of those eventually along with the great big bunch of products Lou sent me.  On a side note, I don’t know about you, but I’m just super excited for Christmas this year.  The decorations are out, our tree is up and we just need to add a little garland action then it will be complete.  As always, thanks for reading and check back soon.
